JESSIE REYEZ PHONE CALLS

Plenty of listeners first became acquainted with the ferocious Toronto talent Jessie Reyez with the real-talk single ‘Figures’, but here we have a potential new favourite with ‘Phone Calls’. Full of that intense, straight-talking energy, Reyez’s vocal brings a vibrant rhythm to life before that beat kicks in. In the space of a year, the Canadian singer, rapper and songwriter has skyrocketed to success, collaborating with the likes of Chance The Rapper and Calvin Harris, and with ‘Phone Calls’ Reyez reveals how certain people have changed their attitude towards her. As she explained during an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, this song isn’t all about “trust issues” and “snake ones”, but also it’s about "respecting people that were down with me from the beginning. People that didn't really have anything to gain or people that just had faith to have faith. People that were riders just to be riders." The contrast of raw vocal and slick beats punctuates her truth, once again proving Reyez to be a different kind of star. - HT
